Introducing Enveloop - the sustainable e-commerce solution
A pioneering South African innovation has produced a unique eco-friendly packaging alternative for the courier industry, called Enveloop. The paper courier bag by Detpak is biodegradable, compostable and the most cost-effective of its kind.
Trialled last year, the bags are now being rolled out to mainstream retailers as a sustainable e-commerce solution that allows for custom prints; and it comes in two sizes, offering affordable choices to small businesses and large corporations alike.
The success of the Enveloop paper courier bag lies with timing, says marketing manager Carla Breytenbach at Detpak. “The global surge in online shopping spurred demand for packaging on local shores too. At the same time, the world is moving away from single-use plastics.
“Several sustainable options in so-called ‘last-mile’ delivery packaging has emerged. In most cases however, the cost of such alternatives has been prohibitively high.”
In addition to satisfying sustainability goals, the design would also need sufficient strength and malleability to withstand the rigours of handling along the delivery chain – from despatch to front door, no matter the distance.”
Sustainability
Fundamental to the courier bag’s development was Detpak’s all-encompassing approach to sustainability. Detpak is part of a group of companies of which the majority shareholding is held by Mpact - the largest paper and plastics packaging and recycling business in Southern Africa.
Since launch, production of the Detpak paper courier bag has been undertaken at the company’s Johannesburg South factory. Committed to ethically sourced material, the company’s latest addition is manufactured from FSC certified paper. Glues and inks are water-based to minimize the effect on the environment.
